Cebu, known for its vibrant culture and picturesque landscapes, has added another jewel to its crown with the recent opening of Plaza sa Katawhan, also known as People’s Park. The grand inauguration took place on January 18, 2024, led by Mayor Mike Rama and his wife Malou, accompanied by esteemed guests, including Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista.
The location of the People’s Park, strategically situated across the Cebu-Cordova Link Expressway (CCLEX), enhances its accessibility and prominence. The park, resembling iconic spaces in Singapore and Melbourne, promises to be a hub for families, friends, and solo travelers seeking leisure and relaxation.
Secretary Jaime Bautista emphasized the significance of such projects, stating, “I hope projects like this park will cascade the effort of the government to ordinary citizens and residents, in the same way we are constructing airports, seaports, expressways, and railways to improve mobility and connectivity.”
Vice Mayor Raymond Alvin Garcia, expressing gratitude to those who contributed to the park’s development, highlighted the unity that made the project possible. He compared the People’s Park to open spaces in international cities, envisioning it as a prime example where people can gather with family, friends, and pets, fostering a sense of community.
The park, situated near the sea and close to the CCLEX, serves as a scenic spot for residents and visitors alike. Councilors Franklyn Ong and Dondon Hontiveros, City Administrator Collin Rosell, and Department of Interior and Local Government – Cebu City Director Neila Aquino also graced the occasion, underscoring the collaborative effort behind this significant addition to the city.
