Last May 31, we went to the Simala Shrine, and right after, we decided to visit the famous Osmeña Peak in Dalaguete, Cebu. And guess what? It was one of the best places to visit!
But going there wasn’t a sweet ride. For context, we travelled by motorcycle since we considered every trip a kind of road trip. But the thing is, we literally traveled under the scorching heat of the sun!
Even if our skin is a little burned, the reward is far sweeter when you’re at the top of those stony mountains.
My overall experience
Going from Pinamungajan to Sibonga since we decided to visit the Simala Shrine and then going back to the road again bound for Dalaguete was a thrill of a ride. We did stop in between trips since our bodies were aching. Plus, the heat from the sun.
We traveled for over an hour before reaching our destination—Osmeña Peak. After we arrived, we parked our motorcycles and bought water bottles because we were thirsty and wanted to bring them with us during the climb. The locals were so kind.
Now, it’s time to finally climb the mountain, which we didn’t expect to be so high, by the way!
For your information, Osmeña Peak is the highest peak in the province of Cebu. Its elevation is 1,013 meters.
Before we could begin to climb, we were assigned a tour guide. Each traveling group should have one tour guide. I mean, that’s great and convenient, not to mention ate is very funny, chatty, and she guided us all the way from the bottom to the top. She also took pictures and suggested poses and angles. She kept us company, and we were very happy.
We also had a few stops because we were not prepared for any of this. I didn’t have any active lifestyle or even just a simple stretching before going there. So, I was exhausted, but thankfully, the fresh air was comforting and reminded me to finish what I started. Kidding aside, as our group climbed it together and started seeing the beautiful view, we felt great because it was worth it.
The hike itself is relatively short, around 1.3 kilometers, and can be completed in 20-30 minutes, depending on your pace. Despite its brevity, the trail offers a moderate challenge due to its steep inclines and rocky terrain. Proper footwear is essential to avoid slipping on the loose gravel.
What to expect at the top
Overall, it felt like flying. You can see the sea, the neighboring island across, which is the Badian. The scenery from the top is magnificent. Then we posed for pictures and, ate, the tour guide is such a great photographer. We posed like models or some big-time celebrities, feeling it deeply.
We reached the top around 1:00 PM in the afternoon. While the sun is scorching hot, the area at the top is cooler. The view from the top is like the Chocolate Hills from Bohol, but made of stones and smaller portions.
It might also have been great if it was nearing sunset, as it would be less hot and beautiful.
As we prepared to leave…
After 40 minutes at the top, enjoying the view and taking pictures for memories, we decided to go back down to go home. We went to their receiving area and paid our dues, including the entrance fees and the tour guide fees. Since our assigned tour guide was so nice to us and took good pictures, we tipped her PHP 300.00 (around $5.00). She was very happy and thankful, even telling us to come back again and bring a tent! Well, that’s sweet.
They also have comfort rooms for tourists. Since we’re a little exhausted, we have milk teas and a few snacks before leaving.
Tips for hikers
I asked the tour guide what the common mistakes were that hikers make on their first time. So, take note of the following and make sure to bring the necessary items and prepare yourself before the trip:
What to Bring: Carry sufficient water and some snacks. The hike might be short, but staying hydrated is essential. A good pair of hiking shoes will make the rocky terrain easier to manage. Don’t forget your camera or smartphone to capture the incredible views!
Clothing: Wear lightweight, breathable clothing. The weather at the summit can be cooler, so bring a light jacket or windbreaker.
Safety: Always check the weather forecast before your hike. The trail can become slippery and dangerous when wet. Stick to the marked paths and avoid taking shortcuts.
Respect the Environment: Leave no trace. Carry your trash back with you and respect the natural beauty of the area.
Before leaving, check your phones, keys, and other important things because it’s really hard to climb back to the top again after you’ve gone down and are ready to go. According to ate, most travelers forget their keys at the top, so make sure they stay intact with you before going down.
How to get there (For commuters)
Option 1: Travel from Cebu City to Dalaguete (By Bus)
Go to Cebu South Bus Terminal: Head to the Cebu South Bus Terminal located along N. Bacalso Avenue, Cebu City. Board a Bus to Dalaguete: Look for buses bound for Oslob or Santander, as these will pass through Dalaguete. The bus ride typically takes around 3-4 hours. Cost: Approximately PHP 150-180.
Get off at Dalaguete: Inform the bus conductor or driver that you’re heading to Osmeña Peak, and they will drop you off at Dalaguete town proper. By Private Car: Drive to Dalaguete: Follow the Cebu South Road (N. Bacalso Avenue) heading south. The drive is approximately 2.5-3 hours, depending on traffic. Parking: You can park your car in a secure location in Dalaguete town or Mantalongon.
Option 2: Travel from Dalaguete Town Proper to Mantalongon (By Habal-Habal (Motorcycle Taxi))
Find a Habal-Habal: At the Dalaguete town proper, you’ll find habal-habal drivers offering rides to Mantalongon. They are usually around the bus stop area.
Negotiate the Fare: The typical fare for a habal-habal ride to Mantalongon ranges from PHP 100-150 per person.
Ride to Mantalongon: The ride takes about 30-45 minutes. The road is a mix of paved and rough paths, providing a bit of adventure even before the hike starts.
So, there you have it! And if you have your own car or motorcycle, just open your Google Maps or Waze, pin down your destination, and just follow the road ahead. If you’re confused at some intersections, don’t be shy to ask some locals around!
